Shilpa Ray and her Happy Hookers opened. This odd pairing turned into a remarkably good show. Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. melted the faces of their many hard-core fans quite appropriately, given their reputation. Shipla Ray's sawshbuckly, harmonium-driven music made for an interesting palate cleanser with a psych rock edge. Next time she's in town she needs to meet a few Minneapolis bands like El Le Faunt. 04.08.11SXSW 2011: Dead Milkmen at MWTX[flickr]photo:5600317847[/flickr] The Dead Milkmen performing at the East Side Drive In as part of the Mess With Texas (MWTX) festival at SXSW 2011. This was insanely fun to shoot. Also, a tad dangerous. Thankfully the crowd up front had an extremely positive attitude, helping to pick up fallen comrades and whatnot. I did miss getting photos of a few insane things around me - like a kid climbing the speaker tower to my right and jumping into the crowd from about 20-25 feet in the air, only to land face first in the dirt when a gap appeared in his landing zone. ...

(Chk Chk Chk) at MWTX[flickr]photo:5599826014[/flickr] While Surfer Blood before it had an unexpected circle pit or five and the Dead Milkmen afterwards included some serious professional crowd surfing, the !!! set brought an insane funk-fueled energy to the 4,000+ crowd at the East Side Drive In for Mess With Texas 2011. After a quick visit to the hotel I hopped on my bike and headed out to Mess With Texas, a festival unto itself that coincides with SXSW. With two stages and nearly two dozen bands, this fest would've been reason enough to go to Texas. And it was free. 100% free. And it was an all ages party. 04.02.11SXSW 2011: Chimera Music Night with Plastic Ono Band, tUnE-yArDs, Fig and more[flickr]photo:5552804391[/flickr] Sean Lennon's label, Chimera Music showcased some of their artists and collaborators - along with a single-song performance by tUnE-yArDs and a rare performance by the Plastic Ono Band - at Elysium during SXSW 2011. I stumbled in (quite literally) after being slammed against the stage during Odd Future, Dead Milkmen and !!!'s MWTX performances to find Sean Lennon and Greg Saunier creating some ridiculous noise rock under their Consortium Musicum moniker. I stuck around all the way on through the Plastic Ono Band performance and finished SXSW 2011 among friends. It was a great way to end the week ...

10.29.10Chuck Prophet at the Turf Club (10/15/2010)[flickr]photo:5126958613[/flickr] I was first introduced to Chuck Prophet during Mark Mallman's Marathon 3, when he performed something like 6 or 7 or more hours on the Turf's stage at Mallman's side. His incredible sense of fun, effortless musical talent and blistering guitar solos blew me away. Mark even egged him on - "C'mon Chuck, you've got more notes than that!". Indeed, he did, and he brought a boatload more of them to the Turf just a few days later.
