Vita.MN‘s Vth Anniversary Party at Epic in downtown Minneapolis brought a great variety of bands into a space that doesn’t often see rock and roll these days. Having only been to Epic to shoot two shows so far – P. Diddy and Duran Duranback in April – I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the musical and fashion extravaganza that Vita.MN had planned on Friday night. Fortunately, the mix of Minneapolis artists didin’t disappoint! No Bird Sing, Night Moves, P.O.S. and the Hold Steady proved to be a potent combination. Check out some technical notes and a bunch of seriously celebratory photos after the jump.
1) Stage light was about 15-30% what I’m used to at typical rock venues, which are already pretty dimly lit. 1/100th, f/2.8 at ISO 6400 makes for some tough shooting and that’s pretty much what the majority of these photos were shot at. The last two shows I shot at Epic had a huge touring light rig. This show seemed to use house lights, but I couldn’t tell if it was a rental setup or not. Either way, light was minimal, which provided for a very fun challenge.
2) I was wholly unprepared for the charisma of the Hold Steady. Although I’ve seen these guys before, I hadn’t shot them. Craig Finn‘s insane level of energy left me floored. Seriously, the guy never stopped moving. Combined with a rowdy crowd, it made shooting from the front particularly challenging but I had fun with it and learned a lot. What else can you ask for in a show?
3) This was the first show I’ve shot exclusively for Noise Damage in awhile and it’s the first I’ve posted using Photoshelter. For many months I’ve been working on a proper archive system to store my photos online and offer them for licensing. It’s finally here! Every show I shoot from her on out will go on there first, rather than on Flickr. As much as I love Flickr, I think it’s about time that my photo stream on there returned to a stream of varied creativity rather than a rock photo archive. Also, these aren’t the entirety of the images I got at the show. I’m still not sure what the final format is going to look like, but there’s a good chance that it’ll change as time goes by. Poke around over on my new archives site. Let me know what you think.

And the show?
Vita.MN put on a hell of a show! Lots of fun was had. I wish I had been able to roam a bit but without a photo pit to work in or access to shoot from side stage I had to stick close to the stage for several hours. Friends reported all kinds of sights, from a Playatta video-manipulation station to an Electric Fetus merch booth to performance art. I did manage to sneak in a few Natedogs hot dogs, complete with Surly mustard, which were pretty damn killer. Congrats to my friend Stacy for booking a killer show, and congrats to Vita.MN on their Vth year! Here’s to hoping that their Xth anniversary gig is as much fun as this one.
